Hello and welcome to Books in Between.
I’m Vanessa Monaghan, a writer and blogger who believes the book is almost always better than the movie.
I’m one of those women who always has a book in her bag, but I also usually have an ebook on my iPad and an audiobook on my phone.
In case you can’t tell, I love a good story.
Here’s a few things I’m guessing about you.
- you want to read more, but can’t find the time, or
- you want to join or start a book club, or
- you can’t find anything good to read, or
- you can’t remember the last time you read a fiction book.
I’m guessing these things because that’s what I hear from women every time I pull a book out of my bag.
And they’re the reasons I started Books in Between. To help women read more, rediscover the joy of books and to help you find great stories to read in between work and kids and everything on your to-do list.
I’d love it if you’d join my email list so I can help you find a great book to get lost in. To join, please click here.

Behind the blog
Vanessa Monaghan, Chief Bookworm
In many ways I’m the stereotypical book lover. Growing up I was the girl with her nose always in a book who wanted nothing else for Christmas and my birthday than something new to read. Books helped me through the ups and downs of being a teenager and kept me company on the commute to university. If there was a gold card at the library, I would have had one.
Why I stopped reading
But when I hit my 20s, I started to read less. I was busy building my career, travelling whenever I could or buying and renovating a house. Then I hit the kids and no sleep stage of life and I don’t think I read a book for at least five years.
It was Harry Potter who led me back to reading and reminded me that there’s better place to be than between the pages of a book. Since then I’ve been making up for lost time and now reading is once again one of the biggest sources of happiness in my life.
The women who inspired me to read
I started Books in Between to indulge my love of reading and to help other women find something great to read, but it’s also a tribute to my mother, Leonie.
Mum died in 2017 from pulmonary fibrosis, but was still reading books right up until the end. She always had a stack of books on her bedside table and while our taste in stories was quite different (she loved war romances and epic family sagas), we loved visiting second hand book fairs or bookstores together.
My life out of books
When I’m not reading or writing for Books in Between, I work in communication and marketing. I live in Canberra, Australia and have two teenage bookworms who are the lights of my life.
I love travelling, lattes and listening to podcasts. Most days you can find me on Instagram sharing what I’m reading or writing.
Thanks so much for taking the time to find out a little more about me and about Books in Between.
